Some keep you cool and dry while some trap heat and get heavy with sweat. Some stretch with your body, while others resist your movements.

Most cheer uniforms are made from some combination of these fabrics.
Polyester is the most common fabric in cheer uniforms. It is strong and resists shrinking and wrinkling. Basic polyester does not breathe well but performance polyester wicks moisture effectively. It is the best fabric for competition uniforms and all-around use.
Spandex is the stretch fabric. It can stretch up to five times its resting length and snap back. Most cheer uniforms have 10% to 20% spandex blended with polyester or nylon. It is best for four-way stretch, fitted uniforms.
Nylon is softer than polyester and dries very fast. It feels smooth against the skin. But it can absorb water more than polyester. It is best for practice wear, lightweight uniforms, and hot weather.
Mesh is not a fabric type but a construction style. It has small holes that let air pass through. Mesh panels are added to uniforms in high-sweat portions. It is best to use breathability panels and ventilation in hot conditions.
Cotton is not commonly used in competition cheer uniforms because It absorbs sweat and stays wet. Wet cotton gets heavy and stretches out and also takes a long time to dry. It is not recommended for competition cheer uniforms.
Not all polyester is the same. High-performance cheer fabrics have special features.
"Moisture-wicking" means the fabric pulls sweat away from your skin and spreads it across the surface where it evaporates quickly. Standard polyester has low wicking ability. Ask yourself these questions before ordering uniforms:
Hot and humid? Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric with mesh panels. Cold and dry? Choose mid-weight or heavyweight fabric with less mesh.
Competition only? You can choose lighter fabric because it will not be washed as often. Practice and competition? Choose more durable mid-weight fabric.
Higher quality fabric costs more upfront but lasts longer. Cheaper fabric saves money now but may need replacement after one season.
If you want complex patterns, gradients, or all-over designs, you need sublimation. That requires high-polyester fabric (90% or more).
